On the last day of Black Maternal Health Week, I’m reminding folks that the fight for maternal health does not end.
The fight continues until all Black women are safe, supported, and taken seriously before, during, and long after pregnancy.
Barbara Flynn Currie opened doors for generations of women in public service. She was tough, brilliant, and deeply respected across Illinois.
It was an honor to serve with her. So much of the work we carry forward today rests on the foundation she helped build.
Tax season should not feel like a bait and switch.
But that is exactly what families got.
Trump promised bigger refunds. Instead, working people are getting 65% less than promised while costs keep rising.
I’ll keep fighting for safer pregnancies, healthier mothers, and a healthcare system that treats Black women with dignity.
I’ve successfully passed maternal health legislation, including the extension of Medicaid postpartum coverage to a full year.
But more work must be done.
Mercedes Wells was discharged from a hospital while in active labor. My WELLS Act would prevent similar traumatic situations.
I brought the issue of maternal mortality to Congress nearly a decade ago because nothing was being done.
Black women face higher rates of death, stillbirths, and pregnancy-related complications.
Now, I stand with many of my colleagues dedicated to improving health outcomes.
Black women are still being failed by our healthcare system before, during, and after pregnancy.
President Trump attacks our healthcare and creates fertile ground for racism to grow in our hospitals.
That’s unacceptable.
More work must be done to save Black moms.
Trump chose war with Iran and left the American people to deal with the consequences.
Higher costs, more instability, no plan.
Republicans in Congress are still handing over their war powers instead of standing up for the country they serve.
LIVE: Black maternal health is a matter of life and death.
I’m joined by Members of Congress and health leaders to call out healthcare inequities and condemn Trump’s attacks on healthcare that exacerbate our maternal mortality crisis.

Nineteen years after the shooting at Virginia Tech, we mourn the 32 lives stolen by gun violence.
We owe it to every survivor to offer more than thoughts and prayers; we owe them action. I will keep fighting to end the gun violence epidemic.
TODAY: The House will vote on the War Powers Resolution. Republicans need to see reason and vote with Democrats to rein in this President.
A fragile ceasefire is not enough to end the chaos President Trump started in Iran, especially after VP Vance’s failed negotiations.
I’m holding the students, families, teachers, and staff at Hyde Park Academy close tonight.
The pain of losing a young person to gun violence or surviving such a traumatic experience is unbearable. No child should have to live with this kind of fear.

Black women deserve to be heard, protected, and cared for with dignity.
The Black maternal health crisis is real, and too many lives are at risk because our healthcare system continues to fail Black mothers.
I’ve been working in Congress for nearly a decade to fix it.
Medicaid is not a waste.
It covers doctor visits, prescriptions, prenatal care, mental health support, and treatment people count on.
No matter what, people should be able to have access to affordable healthcare. It’s a right—not a privilege for the wealthy few.
Today, millions of Americans are filing their taxes.
Those tax dollars should be helping families, lowering costs, and strengthening communities, not funding Trump’s costly war with Iran.
I enjoyed speaking with students at Rich Township High School’s IB Global Politics class. They asked such thoughtful questions!
As our young generations continue to grow and learn, they should think about running for office themselves one day.
If people are working hard and still falling behind, that is not a strong economy.
An economy should work for families, not just people at the top.
Trump and Republicans keep making life more expensive for working families.
Trump’s tariffs raised costs.
Their Big Ugly Law cut healthcare and food assistance.
Now, Trump's war in Iran is sending gas prices skyrocketing.
During Black Maternal Health Week, I'm highlighting programs like the free South Side doula initiative, real solutions that saves lives.
Community-led care closes the gap and gives Black mothers the support our health systems have failed to provide for far too long.
The tax filing deadline is almost here.
There are 2 days left until April 15. File your return now to avoid last-minute stress.
