Thank you to the team at Goodwill of Northern New England—which oversees several amazing AmeriCorps initiatives that are now in jeopardy—for sharing these stories with us. Mainers deserve to know the human cost of these reckless cuts. (4/4)
Or the Mainer who drew on her experience living abroad to help New American entrepreneurs navigate the complexities of owning a business—and just had her funding rescinded. Sadly, we’re likely to hear many similar stories. These cuts are happening across the country. The impacts will be huge. (3/4)
When you start to hear the real human stories, the true costs of this callous decision really start to hit home. Like the 167 kids from Waldo County—many of whom have experienced poverty—who were able to participate in a wonderful 4H camp, thanks to an AmeriCorps program. Not anymore. (2/4)
🧵 The Administration hasn’t just proposed eliminating AmeriCorps; it’s taken the first step, abruptly canceling hundreds of millions of dollars in grant funding that supports critical volunteer programs across the country—including many here in Maine. (1/4)
People who say the Republicans' “big beautiful bill” (which includes massive tax cuts for the rich) will add trillions to the federal deficit: ✅ CBO ✅ CRFB ✅ The Joint Committee on Taxation ✅ Countless analysts People who say it won’t: 🔴 The Trump Administration Who should we believe?
REPORTER: Is the president okay with this bill adding to the deficit? LEAVITT: This bill does not add to the deficit
I’m so saddened to hear the news of President Biden's diagnosis. I also know what a fighter he is—and what an incredible community he has in his corner. To the President and his family: You have the love and support of millions behind you. We stand with you, hopeful for a swift and full recovery.
It's also a massive national security threat. Air Force One is essentially an airborne version of The White House. It would cost potentially billions of US taxpayer $ to secure + retrofit the plane so that it meets the rigorous requirements of Air Force One. Talk about "waste, fraud, and abuse."
The President’s claim that the jet was ‘free’ and therefore no big deal, is as laughable as it is delusional. Qatar is infamous for its human rights abuses + has known ties to several terrorist groups. At a time when the Administration is alienating allies, this is who they choose to cozy up with?
Maine congressional leaders slam Trump’s plan to accept $400 million plane from Qatar
Climate change poses an existential threat. We need to take it seriously. You know who agrees? Administrator Zeldin. That’s what he claimed in his confirmation hearing, anyway. But his actions—shutting down climate research, giving free passes to polluters—speak *a lot* louder than his words.
Republicans ended our Ag markup early, cutting off debate on amendments that actually help farmers and families—including mine, which would require USDA to rehire experts Trump fired. @houseagdems.bsky.social would've happily stayed if it meant making this sad excuse for a bill just a bit better.
In an attempt to "put lipstick on a pig" (as RM @repangiecraig.bsky.social so aptly put it), @houseagdems.bsky.social introduced dozens of amendments, including on of mine to restore funding for two local foods programs that have been vital to Maine communities and farmers.
The mission of the EPA is to protect human health and the environment—not to serve industry. Sadly, that’s what this Administration is doing: dismantling regulations, letting big polluters run amok, and straight-up ignoring climate change. They must think EPA stands for Everything Polluters Ask.
The Administration claims that slashing the EPA by 55% will allow it to better focus on its mission of protecting human health and the environment.   Let’s call this what it is: creating an unfunded mandate—and forcing states to pick up the slack.   This isn’t leadership. It’s passing the buck.
🚨 Republicans snuck a provision into their "big beautiful bill" to defund Planned Parenthood. If they get their way, millions would lose access to health care, including cancer screenings and pregnancy testing. Every Republican on the committee voted for this. All so the rich can get richer.
Republicans are at it again, and they're hoping you won’t notice. Cutting services like SNAP and Medicaid, then dumping the fallout on states. Your property taxes? They could go through the roof. Your health care? On the chopping block. But don’t worry—billionaires are getting their tax breaks.
House Republicans’ new budget bills promise widespread harm to people & communities in every state across the U.S. One way they seek to hide these harmful impacts is by slashing federal funding & then passing the buck to state & local gov’ts to make the toughest choices & cuts.🧵
This shift wouldn’t tackle "waste, fraud, and abuse." But it could very well lead to higher local taxes and cuts to services. Why are Republicans trying to throw SNAP into a death spiral? Because giving tax cuts to billionaires is more important to them than feeding children and families. (2/2)
As part of their reckless spending bill, Republicans are proposing changes that could slash SNAP funding by $290 billion, threatening food assistance for millions. They want to offload SNAP costs onto states, forcing them to pick up the tab for a program that's always been federally funded. (1/2)
