I voted against the funding package considered by the House today because we must prevent the further murder of Americans, ensure due process, and address the catastrophic failures by Kristi Noem and the Department of Homeland Security.

I stand ready and willing to work on a bill that keeps government open without compromising our American values or constitutional protections. Even if that’s a partisan idea in this moment.
In the last 24 hours, I have been in contact with Senate Democrats urging them to oppose this package. I am encouraged by Leader Schumer’s suggestion that they will.
In essence, Speaker Johnson is gambling that the Senators are cut from the same shoddy moral cloth that he wears every day.
The Senate does not have to take that bait. They are better than Mike Johnson, and this is their chance to prove it.
That bill then passed the House, but even worse, Speaker Johnson structured the version of that bill we sent to the Senate to include all remaining appropriations bills, forcing Senators to choose between shutting down the government or else endorsing jackbooted assaults on our democracy.
Three days ago, I opposed a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security because it did not put an end to ICE’s lawlessness.
People have asked what can be done in the wake of the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Congress has the power of the purse. We must use it.
The entire Trump White House is complicit. Every Member of Congress who voted for a massive increase in ICE funding last summer is complicit. Every Republican in the House who watched Renee Good’s murder & refused to demand Speaker Johnson conduct oversight is complicit. It is eternally damning.
I have seen the video of ICE’s latest shooting. It is sickening. It was an execution. The Trump Administration will undoubtedly concoct a story to justify their crimes. Do not believe them.
