This week marks the 30th anniversary of National Public Health Week. But this year, the Trump Administration casts a shadow over our celebration of public health accomplishments. Safe streets and food, clean water and air — it starts here, with building a foundation for our public health workforce.
Graphic. Background is a photo of a public health researcher sitting at a desk with scientific equipment. Text reads: “NATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK: IT STARTS HERE.” Logo of Rep. McClellan is present at the bottom center of the page.
The first person in her family to attend high school, my mother ran the TRIO programs at VSU to ensure students like her could go to college. Now those programs are at risk. The Congressional Black Caucus is fighting the Trump Administration’s efforts to dismantle the Department of Education.
Tonight, I’m anchoring a Congressional Black Caucus special order hour on the House floor with @repjamesclyburn.bsky.social on the Trump Administration’s efforts to dismantle the Department of Education. Watch here ⬇️
This year, World Health Day recommits to bettering maternal and newborn health outcomes. As someone who nearly died in childbirth, I know firsthand that this crisis is dire. But the Trump Administration is more interested in tearing down resources than providing relief.

April is National Minority Health Month. On January 14th, the Office of Minority Health at HHS announced its 2025 theme: Advancing Commitments to Eliminate Health Disparities. Today, the website sharing resources to address health disparities is gone.
Screenshot of a Facebook page from the Office of Minority Health at the Department of Health and Human Services that reads: “The HHS Office of Minority Health is proud to announce its 2025 theme: #AdvancingCommitments to Eliminate Health Disparities! Join us and our partners as we share resources all year long to address health disparities impacting racial and ethnic minority groups and American Indian/Alaska Native communities.” Bottom shows a webpage that reads: “404 Not Found: Requested route (minorityhealth.hhs.gov) does not exist.”
Last week, the House did not conduct much legislative business when Speaker Johnson cancelled votes after failing to kill a bill allowing new parents in Congress to vote by proxy. Read my newsletter for more of what you may have missed.
Millions are already feeling the effects of Trump’s senseless tariffs in their retirement and other savings, and costs are only going to go up if nothing changes. He needs to change course, or we’re all going to pay the price.
The U.S. stock market is in a freefall — and Trump has made it plainly obvious that he DOES NOT CARE. His claim that “sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something” is not only cold: it’s not true. These tariffs won’t help anyone, not even his billionaire friends.
Trump: Sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something
Last week in Washington saw a record broken, cancelled votes, more “Signalgate” news, Trump’s senseless tariffs that sent our economy into a tailspin, visitors to my office for spring break, and more. Keep watching to see what you missed.
The night before his assassination, MLK Jr. knew he would not live to see the Beloved Community for which he strived. But he knew we would get there as a nation. As we see an Administration determined to undermine the progress we’ve made, let us recommit to continuing Dr. King’s work.
I met with AFGE Local 448 officials to discuss the Trump Administration’s assault on TSA officers. Congress created TSA after 9/11 revealed weaknesses in private companies managing air travel security. But Trump is still implementing Project 2025’s goals of privatizing transportation security.

Trump’s new sweeping tariffs will hurt ALL Americans’ wallets, raising costs on everything from gasoline to groceries, housing to healthcare, toys to technology, and more. Stocks are plunging as a result.
Since 1935, @ncnwhq.bsky.social has advocated for and empowered women of African descent, their families, and communities. Today, I joined President @shavonab.bsky.social at their Power Policy Summit to discuss how to fight back against the Trump Administration’s efforts to roll back progress.

“Signalgate” is worse than we thought. The Trump Administration’s top national security officials show a pattern of reckless and careless behavior that puts our servicemembers and the American people in danger.
Breaking: National security adviser Mike Waltz's team set up at least 20 Signal chats to discuss official work on issues including Ukraine, China, Gaza and more, according to sources who've been personally added to the chats.
Last week, RFK Jr. announced plans to cut nearly one quarter of the Department of Health and Human Services workforce. His actions threaten research and disease control, and make it harder to navigate health care coverage. I introduced a bill to prevent these reckless HHS mass layoffs.
The SAVE Act is a modern day poll tax and voter suppression, particularly for women, military service members away from home, the disabled and homebound, rural and indigenous communities.  I stood with @demwomencaucus.bsky.social to fight House Republican efforts to roll back our voting rights.
Today, we witnessed history as @booker.senate.gov broke the record for the longest individual speech given on the U.S. Senate floor. That record was held by Strom Thurmond filibustering against the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
