Back from over 24 hours at the Capitol, fighting against the Big Ugly Bullshit bill. I watched Republicans cheer as they cut off 3 mil from food assistance & nearly 14 mil from life-saving healthcare. Adding TRILLIONS to the deficit, all for billionaires. This is a betrayal, but we aren't giving up.
Mary from Hilo & Noelynn from Kīhei are real people in Hawaii that will be hurt as a result of cuts to SNAP. They are honest, hardworking Americans who need a little help to get through a rough patch, not extra red tape & paperwork requirements that would make it even harder to feed their families.
This is what Republicans want to cut, amazing organizations like the Maui Food Bank who feed our communities. Right now, they serve over 40,000 a month. Instead of granting billionaire tax credits, we need to support our families & our local food producers that keep food on our tables.
Republicans finally show up to engage on the heinous bill they introduced, but only because the Democratic Ranking Member called for the committee to adjourn. Well now, that's called a "work requirement."
I introduced the GHOST Act to give law enforcement the tools they need to track & prevent the production of dangerous ghost guns. Mahalo to HPD & ATF for demonstrating how easily these illegal, deadly weapons can be assembled & how critical it is to close loopholes & keep our communities safe.
Hear from the friends & 'ohana of 1st Lt. Kauhaihao as they share the significance it held for them to redesignate the Captain Cook Post Office in his honor. We will never forget John & the entire generation of Vietnam veterans who sacrificed so much for our nation.
Proud to join Maui Food Bank for the launch of Da Mobile Market, a big step towards making sure families from West Maui to Hāna all have access to fresh, healthy food. Mahalo to everyone who is working hard to ensure our families don't go without, no matter where they live.
Mahalo Colin & Axios for inviting me to discuss the role critical minerals play in national defense & how Hawaiʻi's position in the Indo-Pacific affects strategic competition & partnerships. Looking forward to continuing the conversation about how we can stay ahead in keeping our country safe.
SNAP is a lifeline for over 80,000 keiki & kūpuna who would starve without it. Cutting $230B in food assistance is not cutting waste or fraud, it's taking food from our seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, all of our most vulnerable people. To House Republicans: keep your hands off SNAP.
Honored to recognize the participants of this year's Congressional Art Competition at Windward Community College! A big mahalo & congratulations to all the talented finalists, their teachers, families—especially Emily-Ann Oshiro, whose "Self-Portrait" will be displayed in the Capitol for a year. 🎨
President Trump is using an 18th century wartime law to deport immigrants with no oversight. This same law was used to imprison my family and many other Japanese Americans during WWII. It's on us to protect due process & defend the values of our nation. This is un-American, illegal, and must stop.
Standing strong with House and Senate Democrats today against 100 days of this administration's chaos and cruelty. We’re not backing down until America is the place we know it can be—where everyone in our communities are safe, healthy & thriving with chances for success. We can get there, together.
Connected with the Hawai‘i Coalition for Civil Rights on fighting against this administration's assaults on immigration & civil rights, social justice & the rule of law. Mahalo and I will continue to stand with you to protect our communities from all these reckless & dangerous attacks.
This administration's anti-DEI policies are erasing the courageous accomplishments of Japanese-American service members of the 44nd/100th & MIS. They fought bravely for a country that treated them as an enemy. Our leaders should have a basic respect for history, not engage in digital book burning.
Grateful to AARP Hawaiʻi for meeting with me to talk Social Security & Medicaid. These programs are essential lifelines for our kūpuna & families who are trying to make ends meet. Mahalo for your advocacy, I stand with you in protecting our social safety nets from threats from this administration.
Visited Wahiawa Health to see how crucial Title X funding supports family planning and preventative health services. With these funds now frozen, clinics like Wahiawa are at risk. We must protect Title X to ensure families have access to healthcare and to keep these critical services in tact.
Mahalo to HCAP’s Kunia Head Start for the warm welcome & talk story. It's heartwarming to see keiki happy and thriving. Head Start is crucial in giving our children a chance, and must be protected at all costs against cuts & disruptions. Our keiki deserve the best shot at a strong future.
