I found this oddly comforting after a day spent rewriting. From Michael Cunningham's new memoir Unsayable: A Life in Writing:
"Writers always get things at least a little bit wrong. Or, more accurately, writers' sense of getting things right seldom feels entirely right to anyone but us."
It's not about qualifications. It's about the perils of writing about specific material to which you may have a connection so close or personal that it becomes difficult to see any approach other than your own as valid.
And with that, and admiration for her work and his, I will sign off!
I'm only mentioning this bc it's honestly personal to me in one way, which is that I have never and would never publicly trash someone who writes about the same material that I do, except if it's irredeemably morally reprehensible. I do it the honorable way: To every friend I have, over drinks. >
The 1 thing I'd like to argue against is EW's assertion that she's "hardly punching down" by going hard at Nolan. True, but she is punching laterally. She and Nolan are both serious artists in different media, engaged by the same material. I wish I saw more of a baseline of respect. But...shrug. >
Are you asking me if, in general, writers should publicly review adaptations of their work? No, in general, they should not. This is a closer call because it's not a direct adaptation.
My take on today's Odyssey controversy is, with all respect to everyone involved, that plumbers generally shouldn't review movies about plumbing.
It's not an app, it's a pricing category--Premium Video on Demand. So yes, when Amazon (or Apple or Fandango or YouTube) charges $19.99 or $24.99, that's PVOD. Usually for big and/or very recently released movies; after a while, the price drops or it streams for free somewhere.
