This day marks an unfathomable human tragedy—compounded by the devastating toll of the ensuing war. We must remain steadfast in our commitment to stand against terrorism and hate in all forms, and to achieve a ceasefire—and a just and lasting peace—in Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel. [2/2]
Today, we remember the more than 1,200 men, women, and children murdered, and hundreds of people taken hostage by Hamas on October 7th. [1/2]
Although she recently retired, Hermelinda’s story reminds us of the power of rebirth and resilience. Her CET team and a grateful community carry on her legacy. 3/3
For more than 50 years, Hermelinda poured her heart and soul into the Center for Employment Training in San José–as president and CEO, she transformed CET into a national model, opening doors, strengthening career opportunities, and breaking down barriers for countless marginalized communities. 2/3
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, I want to celebrate Hermelinda Sapien — a trailblazer in expanding workforce development for generations of community members: farmworkers, laid-off tech fab workers, immigrants, young high school graduates, and older adults experiencing re-entry. 1/3
Chag Sameach! May your Sukkot be filled with happiness, blessings, and good company.

through recession and budget battles, so we launched the Beautify San José initiative to leverage the energy of our community to help us tackle blight in our city. I’m grateful for the tremendous progress we’ve seen in that partnership…with more to come! [2/2]
San José has a tremendously dedicated group of neighborhood and community leaders, and I celebrated them and their partnership with City Hall this weekend at the 2025 Neighborhoods Conference. When I became mayor in 2015, we’d just endured the loss of more than 1,000 city employees [1/2]
Trump’s retribution comprises a gift to China, hamstringing America’s ability to win our clean energy future–we will fight this. [2/2]
Trump’s cuts in clean energy projects have overwhelmingly targeted Democratic districts. This amounts to cuts of $94,968,354 for energy innovation in Silicon Valley, and $8 billion nationwide. [1/2]
Just another day of the President violating the order of a crazy leftist federal court….oh, wait…she’s a Trump appointee…

Military personnel and other federal employees in our community are required to forgo their paychecks at a time when too many struggle to buy groceries and pay bills.
Until the government reopens, in solidarity with them, I will forgo my salary.
The cost of living is punishing enough. 24,000 neighbors in our community will face higher health care premiums if the ACA tax credits are not extended.
